Plexwood is an organization concerned with the development, production and sale of a new architectural material, under the trademark plexwood®. The distinctive strength of Plexwood lies in its fine line structure of the wood it produces, by using cross-glued veneers.

Due to the use of veneers end grain wood and wood with the grain, plexwood has a clear line structure for graphical effects. With the use of end grain wood, plexwood in general is stronger than regular cut wood of the same tree, which makes it possible to use softer production wood for intensive use. Through the composition and way of production, plexwood is seen as a sustainable product.

Plexwood consist of a unique line of high-quality products for conceptual application. Plexwood can be used throughout the entire interior, with endless variation possibilities for ultimate design freedom and flexibility.

Plexwood is available in 9 kinds of wood; birch, beech, oak, pine, pine/ocoumé, meranti, ocoumé, poplar and deal.

Plexwood is available in 10 product groups; strip, parquet strip, plank, tile, panel one-sided, panel two-sided, panel flexible, solid and profile.

Provided it is treated properly, wood is a highly sustainable material with a long lifespan, and plexwood in particular is excellently suited for reuse, features exceptional insulating properties.

Sustainability is a broad concept that entails the relationship between people, profit and the planet. An organization is considered sustainable if the relationship between these different aspects is considered deliberately and carefully at all times and a proper balance is pursued. A product is considered sustainable if, during all phases of production, deliberate and careful consideration is given to all matters related to the production method, basic materials used and requirements that the end product must meet in order to contribute sustainably to the life cycle - from source to product and back to source.

Trees contribute naturally to a cleaner climate by removing an average of 0.89-1.0 tonnes of CO² from the atmosphere for every m³ of growth and wood is able to secure CO² in a sustainable manner. The kinds of wood most commonly used in Europe are harvested from certain species of trees that are known to produce relatively good (soft) wood within a relatively short period of time and, if necessary, can be planted especially for production. Production trees are cut down within 20 to 120 years on average from forests that are managed sustainably when replanting (on the same land) and are unrivalled when it comes to producing general building materials using a minimum of energy, since forest trees are a continuous production source and do not release polluting residues into the environment.

The trees are stripped to produce plexwood and, since plexwood is comprised of thin end-grain and long-grain veneers glued crosswise, the result are a distinct line structure with a graphic effect and, since end-grain wood ensures that plexwood is stronger than normal sawn wood on average, softer wood types can also be used to produce products designed for intensive use. No formaldehyde-based glue is used in our production process likewise, we do not use any Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) in our production process in order to improve the quality of the wood and, instead, take advantage of the natural qualities of end-grain wood. Plexwood is made of production-based wood harvested, predominantly from forests certified for sustainable management based on origin (i.e. national regulations and legislation regulate sustainable management practices) or based on a quality seal (i.e. the organisation regulates sustainable management practices) and, if a specific qualification is required (such as a quality seal), we offer the possibility to purchase and produce the required materials specifically to customer requirements.

Plexwood is produced in the Netherlands under one of the world’s strictest national regulations and legislation with regard to humans and the environment, and in the production we rely strongly on the work of individuals with a social and/or physical disability. Plexwood offers all employees on every level the possibility to combine their work with caring for children and other family members. Plexwood promotes knowledge sharing by offering national and international traineeships and work experience opportunities as a certified learning company and is involved on a social level with the further development of ‘economic botany’. More than 98 % of waste from the production process is recycled. Provided it is treated properly, wood is a highly sustainable material with a long lifespan, and plexwood in particular is excellently suited for reuse, features exceptional insulating properties and, finally, can be recycled at the end of its life cycle into biomass.
